How to Choose a Frame

1. The first step in choosing a frame is deciding where you will display your portrait. Even the most beautiful frame can look out of place if it is not coordinated to match its surroundings.

Consider the color of the furniture and woodwork in the room where you will be displaying your portrait as well as the color of the walls. Focus on finding a frame with similar tones. This will help draw the room together while at the same time subtly accenting your portrait.

Another thing to consider is the theme or “feel” of the room where you will display your portrait. A frame hanging in a north woods themed room would certainly not be the same frame you would choose for a room with Victorian furnishings and an elaborately patterned rug.

Also consider the type of lines in the room you have chosen. Does your woodwork have rounded or squared corners? Is your furniture curvy or more straight and formal? Then choose a frame that has the same type of lines.

2. Secondly, you will need to decide what size portrait will look best in the place you have chosen. Hanging a desk portrait above your sofa would obviously look awkward. Besides being a tiny spot on a large wall, people would have to stand on the sofa in order to get close enough to really see the subjects’ faces. The only time your family members would get a good view of it would be when they were dusting it (and we all know how often that happens).

3. Once you have a general idea of the type of frame you would like, describe it to us and we will show you some options. Or better yet, take a picture of the area where you are planning to display your portrait and show it to us. We have an extensive collection of frames to choose from and a lot of experience customizing portraits and frames to match a room.
